HBM Reviews: Bleach: Soul Resurreccion

"Ignite the battle against the Arrancars!"
It's about fucking time I got this game! I had to wait 2 and a half agonizing months to get this game after it came out! And you know why?! Because we took maybe a week long vacation to Cape May and right when we get back? "DURR, WE'RE BEHIND ON TAXES FOR 9 BLLION YEARS. NO PREORDERIN' NUFFIN' FOR ANYBODY!" Fuck you, government.

Anyway, onto the stuff about the game and not the 983,294th circle of hell known as tax collecting: Bleach: Soul Resurreccion is the first Bleach game to be localized outside of Japan since Bleach: the 3rd Phantom and it's the first Bleach game for the PS3, so obviously, expectations WILL be high for this game. Onto the review now!

Are you surprised that this is the main HERO?
The plot of this game's story mode is the whole Arrancar Arc of Bleach jammed into 14 episodes of gameplay. Which means they had to cut out A LOT of fights (namely Rukia vs. Arroniero, Uryu/Renji/Mayuri vs. Szayelaporro, and Byakuya vs. Zommari). Thankfully, they do tell you about certain parts in the prologue to each episode and through dialogue while you're playing, so it's not like you miss out on too much details. However, if you haven't been keeping up with the manga or Japanese anime online, this game is ripe with spoilers.

There are a total of 19 playable characters in this game (not counting Ichigo's multiple forms). There are: Ichigo Kurosaki (Bankai*/Skull-Clad**/Final), Uryu Ishida, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, Kenpachi Zaraki, Nnoitora Gilga, Rukia Kuchiki, Ulquiorra Cifer, Full Hollow Ichigo, Toshiro Hitsugaya, Tier Halibel, Soi Fon, Barragan Louisenbairn, Shunsui Kyoraku, Coyote Stark, Byakuya Kuchiki, Yoruichi Shihoin, Sosuke Aizen (Mullet Form), Gin Ichimaru, and Kokuto**. There are also a few unplayable bosses: Rudobon Chelutte, Yammy Llargo, Sosuke Aizen's 1st and Final transformations, and (only in Mission and Soul Attack modes) Sajin Komamura. Certain characters are also shown in dialogue and the character customization chart, so not too much characters get left out.

The gameplay is in a nice Beat 'Em Up style. You use the L Stick to move, X Button to jump, Square button to use melee attacks, Triangle button to use Spirit Pressure attacks/projectiles, O button to use Special attacks, L1 to Lock On to enemies, R1 to guard, R2 to dash, and L2 to go into Ignition mode when the Ignition meter is full or (when in Ignition Mode) use your ignition attack.

In each stage, you have to go in a certain direction and defeat enemies on the way. Defeating enemies and destroying objects gets you Soul Points, which you use to purchase Level Ups for your characters. When you get to certain points in stages, you will be trapped in that point until you defeat certain/all enemies.

The 3 modes are Story mode, Mission mode, and Soul Attack mode. Story mode is where you unlock most of the characters and go through the story. Mission mode is where you go through missions to get high scores. Soul attack mode is where you go through stages to get a high score that is put onto an online scoreboard.

The music in this game is awesome. It seems to try to emulate Bleach's style of music in a fast-paced, fighting kind of style, and succeeds! I don't think I found any track unenjoyable. Unfortunately for the non-Japanese versions, we don't get Ranbu no Melody (the Japanese version's theme) as the opening song due to "copyright issues," so I have to take off a couple decimal points for that.

There aren't too much extras. Most of the characters are unlocked in Story mode, from mission mode, you get stuff for the Collection, Ichigo's Skull-Clad and Final forms, and Kokuto, and Soul Attack mode doesn't really get you anything.

This game pretty much rules, but it's a bit too easy. I've only had the game 3 days, and I already have like, half of the trophies.

Well, I don't know how often I'll be able to update these days, but I'll try to get an update in at least twice a month. HBM, signing off!
* Everyone's in their Bankais/Resurreccions by default, except for the people who don't have them/haven't revealed them at this point.

** Skull-Clad Ichigo and Kokuto are from the 4th movie, "Bleach: Hell Chapter." The only reason I'm pointing this out is because the movie only came to DVD in Japan a few months ago and we here in the USA aren't getting the 3rd move, "Fade to Black," until next month so... yeah...
