HBM Reviews: Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?

Hey peeps. Like many people, I'm a big fan of Adventure Time, even though I'm clearly older than the target demographic. So I was pretty psyched when I heard there was an Adventure Time game coming to the DS and 3DS. I got the 3DS version, but as far as I know there are no differences other than the 3D feature and some music. Okay, let's get to this.

The plot, as the title should be able to tell you, is that one day, Finn and Jake wake up to find their garbage missing, and Ice King flies over to tell them he stole it. So the whole game is basically an adventure to get back Finn and Jake's garbage across the land of Ooo.

The game controls pretty satisfactorily, and is reminiscent of Zelda II: Adventure of Link. The overworld is an overhead view, and you can enter key locations, battle enemies if you run into them, and once you unlock some abilities for Jake, you can turn him into a bridge to crosse gaps, a giant to destroy roadblocks, a boat to cross oceans, and lengthen his legs to go up mountains. When not in the overworld, you control Finn with Jake in his backpack. You use Y to attack normally (at first with fists, but later with the sword), X to use Jake's attack (and some other unlockable Jake abilites), B to jump, and A to talk to people and open chests. The touch screen is BMO and using him, you can see Finn's stats, unlocked abilities, what items you have, food you can use, the map, and options.

The music is fairly good, but it doesn't exactly have an Adventure Time feel to it, if you know what I mean. The graphics are very great and the animation does capture that Adventure Time feel. I am a bit disappointed that some characters (Marceline's Dad, Lich, Billy etc.) weren't included, and that most characters don't have voices, but it's okay.

Overall, while this is a good game, it's just not the perfect Adventure Time experience. Don't get me wrong, I like the game and have fun playing it, it's just not as big and great as it could have been (I beat it in about 4-5 hours). Hopefully the next Adventure Time game will be for home consoles and will be much more expansive. Until then, this will have to do.

HBM Signing Out.
