Project X Zone Demo A

Okay, yeah, I know I'm a week late with this shit. SORRY, ALRIGHT?! I HAVE A FUCKING LIFE! Anyway, yeah, so Project X Zone certainly is... something. It's a crossover between Sega, Capcom, and Namco Bandai, combining most of their most popular franchises (as long as they have anime-esque art styles, for some reason >_<) into a massive epic adventure to... I dunno, find out if rainbows really do taste like Skittles? Some shit like that. Anyway, it was released toward the end of last year in Japan, and after much petitioning and even the lead Tekken/Soul Calibur developer, Katsuhiro Harada, trying to get it localized, PXZ is coming out worldwide! While it may not have any dubbing in other languages, at least we're getting it!

Of course, the demo was just released to hype us up more and give us a taste of the game if we were previously unable, but that's enough for me. Keep in mind a few things right now: #1: Of all the series' represented in this game, I'm only really familiar with Street Fighter, Tekken, Megaman, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Darkstalkers, and Ghosts 'n' Goblins characters, so please excuse any ignorance of the other franchises; and #2: I've only just played the demo yesterday. So yeah, let's get started here.

To start off, I felt an uncanny resemblance to Bleach: The 3rd Phantom right off the bat. The grid-like layout, the enhancing skills and items, it just seemed like 3rd Phantom to me. However, the combat is very different.

The characters, rather than fighting in solo units, fight in duos. The character units available to you in this demo are Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter (with Devilotte from Cyberbots as an assist), Kite and BlackRose from .hack, Soma and Alisa from God Eater Burst (with Lindow from the same game as an assist), Ichiro and Sakura from Sakura Wars, Erica and Gemini from Sakura Wars (with Ulala from Space Channel 5 as an assist) , and Kurt and Riela from Valkyria Chronicles (with Imca as an assist). In this demo, you fight some generic enemies and Aya-me from Sakura Wars. Once you defeat Aya-me, the demo's over. Pretty short and sweet.

The standard RPG rules apply here: You have your HP and EXP. When HP runs out, you die. When EXP fills up, you level up. There's also one more meter called the Cross Gauge. As you take damage, fight, and perform certain combos, your characters will gain XP (Cross Points). You can have your characters perform special skills by expending XP. Also, when an enemy attacks, if you have enough XP, you can use it to counter-attack, block, or nullify the enemy attack. Countering and blocking cost 20 XP, while nullifying costs 60. When you have your characters on the map, you can use XP to perform special character-specific skills (such as healing, stat boosts, etc), or you can use an item to heal or strengthen them. You can move your characters on the blue spaces, and attack enemies when they're within the yellow spaces surrounding your character.

Now, onto combet. You perform by pressing A and the control pad/D-pad in one of the four directions. You can do this once for each combo, then one more time for a single combo before the battle scene ends. If your characters have an assist character equipped, you can have the assist attack with the L button. If another pair of characters is close enough to the attackers, you can have them attack with the R button. If your Cross Gauge is at 100% or more, you can perform a super attack to devastate your opponents. This is probably the best use of the Cross Gauge.

Overall, this demo hyped me up even more for Project X Zone. Just from the demo, I want to get into God Eater Burst, and I'm sure the full game will do the same for some of the other franchises represented. Overall, a pretty good demo.
