E3 2015: My Thoughts

So, E3 was this week. It happens every year in June, and I'm here to document the stuff that interested me.

But first, let's talk about the conferences. Personally, I only watched 3: Sony's, Nintendo's, and Square-Enix's. And that's actually pretty much the order of good to bad with those conferences. Sony knocked it out of the park with their presentation, Nintendo's was pretty solid, and Square's... they couldn't get to the shit people actually care about soon enough. Bleugh.

But, with that said, here's the stuff that interested me at E3 2015.

Super Smash Bros DLC (Wii U, 3DS): On Sunday, they put up a video presentation on the new Smash Bros DLC that was released a couple minutes after that video. I already talked about it in another post, read about it here.

Earthbound Beginnings (Wii U): Mother 1 is finally coming to the US, and it's being called Earthbound Beginnings. It's basically the same as the Earthbound Zero prototype, and it's on the Wii U eShop. Available now.

Nintendo World Championships 2015: If you don't know what this is, the Nintendo World Championships were basically a video game tournament held by Nintendo in the early 90's, basically a real life version of the tournament from The Wizard (remember that movie?). Anyway, they brought it back for it's 25th anniversary, and for the most part, it was fun, The players did well and were obviously having fun, they brought out Reggie and Miyamoto as special guests, and they showed off a new game that I'll get to later. In the end, the winner was John Numbers, and both he and the runner-up, Cosmo, went home with New 3DS XLs signed by Miyamoto.

So, I'd say the NWC was a success, and I'd love to see it made into an annual thing. Who knows, maybe one year, I could be a contestant...

South Park: The Fractured but Whole (PS4, XBOne, PC): It's another South Park game, a continuation of Stick of Truth. Only this time, it's themed around superheroes rather than fantasy, SoT was great, and it's friggin' South Park, so of course I'll check it out. Coming 2016.

The Last Guardian (PS4): After years of no news on this title, Sony finally gave a gameplay trailer. And it looks pretty nice. It's basically about a little boy, his giant bird-like pet, their bond, and helping each other out with puzzles. The beast can catch the boy when he makes a perilous fall, and the boy even has to help the beast at a couple points. Overall, it looks like a cute, fun adventure. Coming 2016.

OHMYGODIT'SADORABLEIWANTONE!
Horizon: Zero Dawn (PS4): A completely new IP that actually interests me that's not from Nintendo?! Hot damn! This game is set in the distant future, after modern civilization has collapsed, the cities have been overtaken by wildlife, and there a animal-like machines roaming about. You play as a tribal woman with a high-tech bow, and you have to hunt and scavenge from the various techno-creatures. It looks really cool, and I'm pretty interested to see how this plays out. Coming 2016.

Street Fighter V (PS4, PC): They only spent a couple minutes on this. They showed the 4 confirmed characters thus far, and introduced 2 more veterans: Birdie from Street Fighter Alpha, and Cammy. The beta for PS4 comes out on July 23rd. Pretty cool stuff, short and sweet. Coming March 2016.

Dreams (PS4): From the makers of LittleBigPlanet, we have yet another game where you can make whatever you want. This time, you move your controller to make a 3d painting on the screen to create a dream. You can play the dream, edit other people's dreams, it looks like a feel-good experience.

World of Final Fantasy (PS4): It's yet another chibi-style Final Fantasy. You play as two siblings, they can be either chibi or anime-esque, you can befriend monsters, have them ride you, or you can ride them. I dunno, maybe it'll be good, but I'm skeptical. Coming 2016.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4, others TBA): Yes, you read that right. Final Fantasy VII, after all these years of fans begging for it, is finally being completely remade for the PS4 (and other consoles TBA). I mean, it was only a 2 minute CG trailer, basically saying "It exists! Happy now?!" But hey, it's something! Apparently, they'll be changing the gameplay and story to update it for current gen, which I'm fine with. More info is coming in Winter.

It's... It's beautiful! *single tear*
Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4, XBOne, PC): So, the trailer starts out with The Joker's cremation (he died at the end of City). Now, this makes me skeptical about how legit this is. Maybe he really is dead, and maybe they'll pull some plot-twist, back-from-the-dead, Coulson-ass bullshit, I dunno. Anyway, we get to see the PS4-exclusive Nightmare missions, where you play as a cop, in a first-person view, fighting off zombies or something like that. It looks pretty cool. Coming 6/23/15.

Project Morpheus (PS4): So, this is Sony's VR system for the PS4. There'll be multiplayer games, the VR is optional, they showed a few games, it looks kinda cool. Of course, it's too early to make assumptions... Coming early 2016.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS3, PS4, XB360, XBOne, PC): So, one of the final Phantom Pain trailers leading up to release. And, hoo boy, it does not disappoint. Crazy techno-soldiers, Psycho Mantis with what appears to be a flaming vision of Volgin, spikes coming out of the ground chasing Snake, a woman that looks like Paz, some mechs, Skull Face capturing Snake, and the reveal that Eli has a twin, revealing he is, indeed, Liquid Snake (or possibly Solid, I dunno). I cannot wait... Coming 9/1/15.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (PS4): So, the demo had some technical difficulties to start off: the cutscene transitions into gameplay and... Nate just stands there. Thankfully, when gameplay started, it was basically what we've come to expect of Uncharted. There was an armored truck, a marcketplace gunfight, a car chase scene, and a grappling hook, it was just awesome. It looks really awesome. Coming early 2016.

Star Fox Zero (Wii U): Well, the new Star Fox game is here, and it looks like Star Fox 64 combined with the unreleased Star Fox 2. There's a first person view on the Gamepad, the Arwing can transform into a Walker, the Landmaster can turn into a huge carrier-like thing, and there's a Gyrocopter you can find secrets with. Basically, it's pretty much Star Fox 64 2 (Star Fox 128?). I'm excited. Coming late 2015.

Look at his dog-ass lips...
The Legend of Zelda: Trifore Heroes (3DS): So, you remember Zelda: Four Swords Adventures? Well, this is basically that, but with 3 players, and Link Between Worlds graphics. There are different outfits you can use that have different abilities, the other Links are dolls in single players, and there's online multiplayer. It looks interesting, maybe I'll play it, I dunno. Coming late 2015.

Hyrule Warriors Legends (3DS): It's Hyrule Warriors, on the 3DS! It has all the DLC, plus Wind Waker levels, along with Tetra and the King of Hyrule as playable characters, and you can swith between characters using the touch screen. This was leaked a little while ago, so it's not a surprise, but it's nice to know this is a thing. You an even link both versions to get Tetra and King of Hyrule on the Wii U version. Coming 2016.

Metroid Prime Federation Force (3DS): So we're finally getting a new Metroid game... and it doesn't have Samus in it... alright. It's set in the Metroid Prime setting, you play as a Galactic Federation squad fighting alien threats, there's four-player co-op, and a 3v3 minigame called Blastball, which was shown at the NWC. It looks alright, I just wish it was something 2D. Coming 2016.

Fire Emblem Fates (3DS): It's the new Fire Emblem game, with the English name revealed, and English voice acting. It's nothing we haven't seen before at this point. Coming 2016.

Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U): We got yet another brief trailer on this. More giant creatures, more mechs, more gameplay, just... more. Coming 12/4/15.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS): It's Mario & Luigi meets Paper Mario. Both universes crossing over. Paper Mario can use his lack of a dimension by slipping through cracks and turning into things for Mario and Luigi to use. There's even a giant Papercraft Mario mech! It just looks awesome. Coming early 2016.

Bowser vs... Bowser?!
Mario Tennis: Ultra Slam (Wii U): It's Mario Tennis on the Wii U! The Mega Mushroom is available as a power-up, it turns you huge, and... that's really it. That's all we got... Coming late 2015

Super Mario Maker (Wii U): Mario Maker got updated, big. There's all kinds of stuff you can do with certain items and enemies, there's a cut-paw cursor, and using amiibos lets you use a mushroom that turns you into that character. It looks pretty cool. Coming 9/11/15 (never forget).

Kingdom Hearts Unchained X(Chi) (iOS, Android): It's a Kingdom Hearts game for smartphones. Apparently, it ties together with the story of KHIII, so that's cool. It's in a chibi style, with turn-based combat, lots of Disney worlds, abilities from various characters, and animal assistants. Who knows how good it'll be? I know I'll still play it anyway.

Kingdom Hearts III (PS4, XBOne): A Tangled world was announced, which is cool. New Heartless (or whatever) were shown, the worlds are huge, the fight with Rock Titan had more shown, more of those super-Keyblade-morph attacks were shown. And in the beginning and end of the trailer, we see very young versions of Master Xehanort and Eraqus talking about the war between light and darkness while playing... chess, I guess? Looks cool, there wasn't nearly enough shown.

Project X Zone 2 (3DS): Oh, hell yeah! Project X Zone is one of the best games on the 3DS, and now it's getting a sequel! The new trailer showed the gameplay, which is basically the same, but the animations are somehow even better! Also, Valkyrie from Adventures of Valkyrie, Ulala from Space Channel 5, and Felicia from Darkstalkers were revealed as assists, and Juri from Street Fighter and Sigma from Mega Man X were revealed as enemies. Hell yes, cannot wait! Coming late 2015.

Hot damn!
Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 (PS4, XBOne, PC): So, the finale of the Naruto series is already being made in game form. That's kinda quick, isn't it? Anyway, the trailer showed gameplay from Naruto and Sasuke's super-holyshit-mega-chakra modes, Sakura's Tsunade-esque mode, Madara, and Obito's Ten-Tails mode. We even see Naruto and Sasuke summon Kurama and Susano'o to battle it out! These games are always great, so I'm looking forward to this. Coming late 2015.

Godzilla (PS3, PS4): We got to see more gameplay from this, and it looks really cool! The trailer showed a bunch of the different monsters you can play as, including PS4 exclusives like Rodan and Mecha-Ghidorah, and a tease for 1964 Godzilla at the end. It looks really cool, and if you preorder, you get Hollywood Godzilla (from the recent Legendary Pictures movie). Looks really badass. Coming 7/14/15.

So, that was my thoughts on E3 this year. It was pretty good, not as cool as some other years, but not the worst.

HBM, signing out.
